One of my favorite lesser-known documentaries – BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO – is coming to NYC’s Film Forum May 12th – 18th. A strong run there will bring the  film to theaters across the country, but they need your help. If you haven’t yes been invited to fund a project using kick-starter as their fund-raising engine – this is a great chance to give it a try. Filmmaker Jessica Oreck and team have crafted a tier of gifts for each level of donation which seem so cool I hope they start selling them too. Visit the project here and give what you can, even $10 will help reach their goal.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo is a beautiful film exploring a culture often ignored or stereotyped by Americans through the lens of a fascination with beetles of all kinds. Filmmaker Jessica Oreck crafts the story with the respect and care of one who shares the love afair with beetles from a young age in fact. Her storytelling is perfectly complemented by Sean Williams’ cinematography and the effect is mesmerizing and ethereal.

Over coffee a year or so ago Jessica told me that her mission as a filmmaker was to “inspire a sense of wonder about nature” in her audience and people in general. With the recent Obama legislation opening up the US coasts to oil exploration and the pounding mother nature has been giving us this year, a sense of awe or wonder may be just what our society needs to inspire us to change the path we are on.
